Hiring a night nurse can feel like dating. You’re inviting someone into your home at 10 PM to help with your most vulnerable, sleep-deprived moments. Plus, your most vulnerable, adorable new baby. On the flip side, they are entering a new home where they need to feel comfortable and safe. So yeah, you want to make sure it's a match.
I actually ended up hiring a night nanny that was not a good match. So these tips definitely come from experience.
Whether you’re booking someone for two nights a week or locking in 12 weeks of full overnight support, your interview is the moment to get clarity, vibe check the energy, and uncover the fine print. I also recommend meeting in person if you can; however, a video call is the next best thing.
Here are smart questions to ask when interviewing a night nurse, plus why they matter.

1. What schedule do you support?
Why it matters: Some families need help 2 nights a week; others want 7 nights for 12 weeks. Some providers only do weekdays, others are fine with weekends or holidays. Make sure they’re available when you actually need help.
2. What’s your typical overnight routine?
Why it matters: Get a sense of how they spend their time during the night shift—feeding, diapering, bottle washing, baby laundry, note-taking? It's helpful for setting expectations on both sides.
3. Do you stay awake the entire night or sleep when baby sleeps?
Why it matters: Some parents feel strongly one way or the other. There’s no right answer, but it’s good to know ahead of time.
4. How many families have you worked with overnight?
Why it matters: Years in the workforce ≠ years of overnight newborn care. Someone could be a longtime nanny but brand new to night work.
5. Are you certified? If so, by which organization?
Why it matters: Some night nurses are also certified postpartum doulas or Newborn Care Specialists (NCS). Others aren't certified but have plenty of hands-on experience. Neither is wrong, but ask if it matters to you.
6. What’s your approach to sleep training or soothing?
Why it matters: Some familes want it, some families don't. There are also a variety of methods. Discuss what's right for you.
7. What’s your fee and how does billing work?
Why it matters: Most night nurses in the DMV charge between $35 and $60 per hour. Make sure you understand their rate, overtime fees, holiday surcharges, and how they handle deposits or cancellations. More on costs here.
8. Do you work with backup support?
Why it matters: If they’re sick or have a family emergency, will someone else cover the shift—or will you be on your own? How will the day be made up? It could be the cost reimbursement, or a makeup day.
9. What happens if I deliver early or late?
Why it matters: Babies rarely follow our schedules. Ask how they handle early or late arrivals—will they be flexible, or do you lose your spot?
10. What accommodations do you need?
Why it matters: Some night nurses are cool with the couch. Others need a guest room. Some drive, others Uber. Ask about parking, fridge space, or anything else they'll need to do their job comfortably.
11. Are you okay with cameras in the house?
Why it matters: Many parents use baby monitors or home cameras. Some providers are fine with it, others aren’t. It’s respectful to ask up front.
12. What kinds of household tasks are included?
Why it matters: Most night nurses handle bottle/pump part washing, baby laundry, and keeping a tidy sleep space. But it’s not universal. Ask what’s included in their scope.
13. Do you keep written logs or notes?
Why it matters: Many providers jot down feeding times, diaper changes, sleep stretches, etc. If you’re type A (or just sleep-deprived), this can be so helpful.
14. Can I run a background check?
Why it matters: This is totally normal. Most professionals will expect it—especially if you’re booking direct instead of through an agency.
15. Do you have references or reviews?
Why it matters: Experience is great. But nothing beats hearing from other parents. Ask for 1–2 recent references or links to testimonials.
16. What are your cancellation or illness policies?
Why it matters: Life happens. Be sure you understand what happens if your provider (or your baby) gets sick, or if there's a weather emergency.
Final Tip:
Chemistry and communication matter. Go with your gut, ask the hard stuff, and don’t be afraid to follow up with more questions later.
